Primary Care Services

Internal Medicine focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of all forms of disease affecting adolescents and adults. Internists coordinate their patients' overall medical care and manage medical problems associated with that care. They perform regular preventive health maintenance exams and health screening tests. Internists are trained to deal with all medical problems with which their patients present, and are equipped to determine when a referral for specialty care is necessary.

Family Practice provides continuing and comprehensive medical care with a particular emphasis on the family unit. Family practitioners possess a broad knowledge base and treat many common problems, as well as acute and chronic illnesses. They provide preventive services, health maintenance exams, and health education. They supervise and coordinate healthcare and arrange appropriate referrals for specialty care.

Women's Health Services provides medical and surgical care to adolescent and adult women with an expertise in addressing obstetrical and gynecological needs. Services include breast health screening, Pap test screening, family planning, infertility treatment, prenatal care and delivery, menopausal management, and disease prevention, detection and treatment.

Specialty Care Services

Endocrinology deals with the disorders of the endocrine system and specific secretions called hormones. Endocrinologists provide evaluation and treatment for a wide range of functional disorders such as uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid imbalance, infertility, metabolic bone disease, glandular cancers, growth hormone problems, and osteoporosis.

Nephrology involves the diagnosis and treatment of kidney function. Nephrologists focus on conditions such as hypertension, electrolyte imbalance, diabetes mellitus, polycystic kidney disease, hematuria (blood in the urine), proteinuria, kidney stones, and acute or chronic kidney failure. In cases of kidney failure, a nephrologist will determine the necessity for dialysis or transplantation and assist in managing the patient undergoing these treatments.

Pulmonology deals with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract. Pulmonologists specialize in complex diseases and conditions of the chest such as asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and infections of the lungs.

Sleep Medicine is the screening, detection and treatment of a variety of sleep disorders by a pulmonologist or neurologist with expertise in sleep medicine. Symptoms may include snoring, chronic exhaustion, restless legs and insomnia. In addition to obtaining a patient history and performing a physical examination, the specialist may investigate the quality of a patient's sleep during an overnight stay at the Center For Sleep Diagnostics at Parkland Medical Center, and make appropriate therapeutic recommendations.
